Doctoral Education Programs in Tennessee

Students will pursue a doctoral degree in education for many reasons. You may more easily obtain positions such as superintendent or professor of a college if you have a doctoral degree in education. The knowledge that is gained when studying for a doctorate in education is another reason students pursue this higher degree. There are doctoral education programs in Tennessee at several colleges and universities.
  1. Tennessee Tech University

    • The doctoral education program at Tennessee Tech University is a newer program, having only been in existence since 2000. Like most doctoral education programs in Tennessee, the program at Tennessee Tech takes 3 years to complete (once the student has a master's degree in education). Completing the Ph.D. dissertation can take years after the initial program. The doctoral program here demands three consecutive semesters of residency during which time students will be given the skills and preparation needed to work in universities, schools and related agencies with at-risk students and diverse groups of students. Admission to the doctoral program at Tennessee Tech University consists of the following requirements: a 3.0 grade point average on a scale of 4.0, at least a combined score of 1,000 on the GRE, a submission of scholarly writing sample, a statement of intent, a resume, an interview with faculty within the program and three letters of recommendation.

    Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of Education

    • Vanderbilt University has a school within the university, Peabody College of Education, where students can earn an undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. in education. The doctoral education program at the Peabody College of Education offers five different areas of study: Community Research and Action, Leadership and Policy Studies, Learning, Teaching and Diversity, Psychological sciences and Special Education. Within these five different disciplines are even more schools of thought to choose from. For example, a student wishing to obtain a Ph.D. in the Learning, Teaching and Diversity discipline would also choose an area of specialization within that discipline, such as Language, Literacy and Culture; Development, Learning and Diversity; or Mathematics and Science Education.

    Middle Tennessee State University

    • Middle Tennessee State University has a doctoral education program in which graduates receive a Specialist in Education Degree. Requirements for admission into the Ed.S program at Middle Tennessee State University are possession of a master's degree and completion of a written and oral comprehensive exam which may be taken no more than twice. MTSU is the most popular college among Tennessee high school graduates as well as the one public university in Tennessee with the highest admissions requirements. More than 200 student organizations await potential students, and the campus has a diverse student body.
