Truck Driver Training Scholarships

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for tractor trailer drivers are expected to increase by 13 percent before 2018. This expectation can lead those who are looking for work to consider a career change to a growing field. However, as with any career change that involves continuing education, costs can defer some prospective drivers from attending school. Luckily many organizations offer scholarships, assisting prospective students by offsetting the costs of training.
  1. Cargill Truck Driver Scholarship

    • Offered by Cargill Meat Solutions, the Cargill Truck Driver Scholarship is provided to students who are interested in the truck-driver training program offered by Blue Ridge Community College. Recipients of the scholarship are awarded a non-renewable scholarship of up to $3,100, depending on the number of scholarships the student has already obtained as well as the training program selected. To qualify for the program, applicants must have two years of steady employment history and a clean driving record. Applicants must also submit a minimum of three references along with a statement of their career goals. Recipients of the scholarship are selected jointly by Cargill Meat Solutions and Blue Ridge Community College, and payments are made directly to the school.

    Truckload Carriers Association

    • Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has been awarding scholarships to prospective truck-driving students since 1973. Recipients will receive awards totaling between $2,000 and $6,000 for the school of their choice each academic year; funds are intended for tuition use only. To qualify, an applicant must be either the child, grandchild or spouse of an employee of TCA member or a TCA independent contractor. Employees and individual contractors of TCA are also eligible for funding. Applications are judged based on scholastic achievements, financial need and community involvement. To apply, individuals must submit a completed application, complete transcripts and information regarding the chosen school.

    Commercial Driver Training Foundation

    • Individuals who have served in a branch of the nation's armed forces have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship program through the Commercial Driver Training Foundation. The foundation offers approximately 2,200 scholarships of $500 each through approved truck-driver training programs. To qualify for the Military Scholarship Assistance Program, an applicant must be either active duty, retired or honorably discharged from a branch of the armed forces. Applicants must also be first-time students; those currently enrolled in a training program do not qualify. A completed application must be submitted along with proof of military service. Awards are dispersed directly to the chosen training program.
