What Grants for Education Are Available?

Grants for education are available to students in all fields and of all races, creeds and talents. Students with unusual abilities or traits not generally thought of as worthy of funding, such as left-handedness, may even apply for special scholarships targeted just to them. Students studying education itself, languages of special interest to business and government, and science and technology can also take advantage of special grants designed to assist them in educating themselves in those areas.
  1. United States Department of State

    • The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State provides the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program, an intensive series of summer programs designed to develop professionals with ability in thirteen languages that the State Department has dubbed "critical." These languages include Arabic, Russian, Persian, Azerbaijani, Korean, Urdu and Bengali. The program accepts students regardless of major, but requires at least advanced beginning to intermediate language skills, depending on the language. Students must be U.S. citizens who are working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree at a U.S.-based institution. Applicants must also be at least 18 years old and at least rising sophomores. The program considers diversity, future plans for the chosen language, cultural adaptability and academic achievement among other selection criteria.

    Juniata College

    • Juniata College offers the Mary Francis Beckley scholarship to left-handed sophomores, juniors and seniors attending that college. The college does not verify students' left-handedness, awarding the scholarship to those who self-identify as left-handed and who achieve excellent academic credentials. Students granted the award receive $1,000 to $1,500 per year. The scholarship was established by two Juniata students who met and eventually married because of their mutual left-handedness.
