Grants for Master's in Counseling & Psychology

Going to graduate school to study psychology is by no means cheap, and depending on your resources and strategy, you could end up racking up several tens of thousands of dollars in government loans. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of financial help out there for the helping professions, but here are a few grants that are available.
  1. Anne Anastasi General Psychology Graduate Student Award

    • This award began in 2010 and was designed to help graduate student researchers. It was named for the American Psychological Association co-founder and previous president Anne Anastasi. To apply, you need to send a copy of your curriculum vitae, your research plan and a letter of recommendation from your adviser.

    APA Diversity Award

    • A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the winners who write the best papers on gender, ethnic and cultural issues in psychotherapy. You must mail three copies of your paper, which is not to be longer than 25 pages.

    Roy Scrivner Memorial Research Grant

    • This research grant can be up to $12,000 and is to be used for research on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender family therapy and psychology.The deadline for this award is Nov. 1.

    Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship

    • This scholarship is to be used toward a project at the graduate level that incorporates a perspective of psychological understanding to demonstrate that the stigma associated with mental illness is actually a serious roadblock on the pathway toward recovery for many individuals. This award of $5,000 is intended to further the research that will help the 50 million Americans living with mental illness in their recovery. Application must be received by May 15.

    Annette U. Rickel Dissertation Award

    • This award of $1,000 is for research on public policy and how it can be used to improve the resources offered to families and children dealing with psychological problems. This might include topics on child abuse, work with at-risk youth, policy for youth in the criminal justice system or school programs. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1.

    Wayne F. Placek Grants

    • Two $15,000 grants are awarded to support research to help the general population to have a better understanding of homosexuality and to aid in the psychological and emotional welfare of lesbians and gay men. Topics may include issues involving the family and the workplace, heterosexual discrimination against gays and research into underrepresented subsections of the LGBT community. Application must be received by March 1.

    Lizette Peterson-Homer Injury Prevention Grant Award

    • This award of up to $5,000 is for research into the psychology and behavior elements of the prevention of harm inflicted upon adolescents and children. It is to be used to work toward the increased welfare of children who are in danger of serious threats to their development and health. The application, which is due on Oct. 1, must include a research proposal, an abstract, a description of the project, budget and a reference.
