International and area relations is an important area of research for those interested in understanding how the world communicates. A variety of institutional research grants are available to students and researchers, and some research grant programs are available independent of educational or college institutional affiliation. Seeking funding for international relations research is often highly competitive but can help with travel, books and technology costs.
  1. Social Science Research Council

    • The Social Science Research Council offers various grant and funding opportunities to academics and researchers engaged in active research on a variety of international affairs issues. Grants such as the Mellon Mays Predoctoral Research grant provide funding for technology, travel, books and equipment costs to support research endeavors.     Smith Richardson Foundation

    • The Smith Richardson Foundation offers grant funding to students conducting Ph.D. dissertation research on international relations, international security, area studies and diplomatic and military history. These grants (up to $7,500 annually as of 2010) are to be utilized to support costs associated with research endeavors. The foundation grants up to 20 awards per year on a competitive basis.     U.S. Department of Education

    • The U.S Department of Education offers a competitive grant program for the development of instructional material to strengthen instruction in the area of international relations, area studies and modern foreign languages. The grant is intended for organizations, institutions, researchers and nonprofit organizations that develop instructional material for these purposes.
