Fill out and send in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits, which is available on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Montgomery GI Bill website (see Resources below for link). This form is needed to register for benefits if you were an enlisted service member automatically enrolled at the beginning of your service and you took a $100 per month reduction in pay during the first 12 months of active service.
Send the completed form to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regional office for the state where your training program is. You may also apply online at the website (see Resources). If you need more information, call the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs toll free at 1-888-GI-BILL-1.

For members of the Selected Reserve (Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard), eligibility ends 14 years from the date you were first eligible for the program if your eligibility began on or after Oct. 1, 1992. If your eligibility began before Oct. 1, 1992, eligibility ends 10 years from the date you were first eligible for the program.
Register for the program if you were a Selective Reservist by keeping DD Form 2384-1, which your unit provided to you when you became eligible for benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill.
