Grants for Women's Study

Women's studies have been in existence in universities since the 1970s, having evolved from the women's movement. According to Appalachian State University, the study of the female gender and dynamics "grew from a concern about the way other academic fields ignored or distorted the concerns, histories, theories, experiences and perspectives of women." Grants are often given in the form of fellowships, entailing specific university work while pursuing an academic career in one of the many areas of women's studies.
  1. Health Studies

    • Women's health studies encompass issues of reproductive health, body image and eating disorders and illness prevalent among females, such as breast cancer. The Brico Fund grants focus on reproductive rights, justice and health, the end goal being "community organizing and advocacy."

    Gender and Sexuality Studies

    • Women's studies can target issues of gender and sexuality as related to homosexuality, pornography, sex work, and gender bias and differences. The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) Fellowship through the City University of New York promotes the unification of "eminent scholars, activists, artists and writers to chart new territory in lesbian and gay studies, and to bring this groundbreaking work to the attention of the larger community."

The Woodrow Wilson Foundation grants fellowships to Ph.D. students of women's literature or another interdisciplinary area. The Woodrow Wilson Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies offers $2,000 for dissertation research expenses.

    Public Policy Studies

    • Women's policy is a broad area of study that encompasses almost every aspect of women's rights and well-being. In exchange for research tasks and assistant work, recipients of the Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellowship in Women & Public Policy will learn about such policy issues as women's economic status, child care access and civic activism with support from the Institute for Women's Policy Research. The Women's Research & Education Institution (WREI) grooms academics to be policy leaders and legislators by offering women training in addition to a stipend and the cost of health insurance and some tuition.
