College Scholarship Requirements

Hundreds of scholarships available to college students often go unused. Some students are unfamiliar with how to "shop" for a scholarship while others might become overwhelmed by the application process. Every scholarship is different and thus has its own unique requirements. However, a student's grade point average (GPA), high school transcripts and personal statement are items usually requested by companies and organizations that offer scholarships.
  1. Grade Point Average (GPA)

    • Many scholarships, whether based on merit or ethnic background, require that a student possess at least a "C" average, which is roughly a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. This requirement is generally applicable to high school and college applicants. Some scholarships have a higher academic standard so be sure to understand the specific and individual requirements as you do your research.

    High School Transcripts

    • High school transcripts are generally required in the scholarship application. Transcripts not only state your GPA, but also highlight the specific classes you've taken. They are the official record of your high school experience and provide awarding organizations with an overall idea of your academic standing.

    Personal Statement

    • Personal statements are letters that offer a description of who you are and what you seek to accomplish within a particular academic program, job and other areas. They allow an organization to get an idea of your goals and also allow you to focus on what is important to you as your pursue your education.

      Be sure to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the dos and don'ts of writing a personal statement for the scholarship organization to which you are applying. Different companies and organizations may require a very specific format and may reject your scholarship application if you do not follow these guidelines to the letter.
