Certificate Programs in Graphic Design

Graphic designers are also known as graphic artists; these professionals plan, create and analyze visual solutions that have to do with communication problems. A bachelor’s degree is usually required in order to become a graphic designer; however, certificate programs are available for those who wish to learn the trade.

    • The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University has a certificate program in electronic graphic design for individuals who seek refinement of their graphic design skills without pursuing an actual degree. This program as of 2010 is designed to be completed in approximately two years on a part-time schedule; students may take classes during the day or in the evening. Courses include computer applications in design, basic typography, professional practice, dimensional design and fundamentals of graphic design.

    Parsons The New School for Design

    • Parsons The New School for Design has a graphics and digital design certificate program. Core classes within this program are offered during the fall and spring semesters only. Students in this certificate program will learn color theory, typography, graphic design, digital imaging with Photoshop, typography and digital graphics with Illustrator.

    Sessions College for Professional Design

    • Sessions College for Professional Design has a graphic design professional certificate program that prepares students for entry into a career as a graphic designer. Students can complete the entire program in as little as six months and can begin the program in any month. Up to 30 students are accepted in each cohort and students will take classes such as Indesign basics, design and composition, fundamentals of typography and fundamentals of logo design.

    New York University

    • New York University has a program in digital and graphic design production that leads to a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the program. Students who successfully complete this program will become proficient in the practical uses of design technology. Entering students should have working knowledge of how to use the Mac operating system as the courses will be taught interchangeably on both PC and Mac operating systems. Students will take courses in the foundations of Photoshop, foundations of Illustrator, Dreamweaver and the foundations of website usability.
