Graphic Design Programs in Canada

According to the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, there are more than two dozen graphic design programs in the country. Programs range in duration from two to four years and can be completed for several different degrees, including certificates, pre-university degrees and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Master of Arts or Master of Science degrees in graphic design are also offered by a number of Canadian higher learning institutions.

    • The Vancouver College of Art & Design's graphic design program trains students with a combination of traditional composition techniques, such as drawing, color theory and typography, and the latest in computer graphic design software and technology. VCAD's five-term program includes such courses as digital photography, electronic design, dynamic media, package design and advertising design. Program graduates have gone on to successful careers in advertising, marketing and print media.

    Ontario College of Art & Design

    • The Ontario College of Art & Design's graphic design degree program allows students to choose from studio courses in interactive communication, motion graphics, branding and editorial design. The program includes a variety of guest lecturer symposiums focused on the business and entrepreneurship skills necessary for a successful graphic design career. The four-year program culminates in a year-long project focused solely on individual student interests.

    Alberta College of Art & Design

    • The Alberta College of Art & Design's extensive visual communications design program encompasses graphic design, advertising and illustration. Along with a comprehensive traditional arts-training regimen, the program places particular emphasis on strategic problem-solving methods and critical thinking skills. Students are geared with tackling complex visual problems through the use of representational, analytical and observational design skills. Program graduates have gone on to such fields as action figure design, animation, game design and graphic novel production.
