Graphic Design Programs in Michigan

The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth predicts that the demand for graphic designers in the state will grow by nearly 10 percent through 2016. A number of colleges and universities in the state offer programs in graphic design. Found at both private and public institutions, these programs combine a broad liberal arts education with studio courses and classes in business to prepare students for entry into the growing field graphic design.
  1. Andrews University

    • Located in Berrien Springs, Andrews University is 10 miles south of Benton Harbor on a 1600-acre rural campus. Affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the school has an undergraduate and graduate enrollment of more than 3,400 students. The university's graphic design program culminates in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and requires coursework in drawing, painting, three-dimensional sculpture, art history, photography, digital imaging and computer design. Religious studies courses are required for all majors as well. All graphic design majors submit a final portfolio for review prior to graduation and must participate in a final exhibition of student work. Each year, the graphic design program hosts an international design study tour for students in the Art Department with previous destinations having included Egypt, Italy and India.

    University of Michigan at Ann Arbor

    • With a combined enrollment of more than 41,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is a large public institution. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report rated the school twenty-seventh among all universities in the United States. The university offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art and design. All students have the opportunity to participate independent study design programs or internships at design firms throughout Michigan. The university reviews students portfolios twice during their academic careers. Also offered through the university is a Master of Fine Arts in art and design for graphic design students as well as a combined Master of Business Administration and Master of Fine Arts degree that incorporates marketing and management coursework and research with graphic design.

    Madonna University

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded Madonna University in 1947 in Livonia, a suburban area 25 miles from Detroit. The college has a combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of 4,000 students and grants both Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees in graphic design. The baccalaureate program requires coursework in art history, computer art, advertising design, color theory and print-making. In addition, students have the option to take additional elective courses in areas like typography, illustration, Photoshop, figure drawing, screen printing, web design and photography. All baccalaureate students complete a senior seminar prior to graduation, which culminates in a comprehensive examination that encompasses all of the required topics covered during the program. A limited number of internships are offered through the university, and interested students can spend one semester studying abroad in one of more than 15 different countries.
