Chaplaincy Correspondence Schools

Chaplains work in prisons, hospitals, the military and community centers. They belong to specific religious denominations, and perform rites at weddings, funerals and baptism ceremonies. Graduates from a chaplaincy course can work in a variety of settings as counselors, administrators and educators. Correspondence schools in chaplaincy training are offered as degree or certificate programs. Depending on the school, chaplaincy students will have to serve as volunteers to successfully complete their training.

    • Upaya Institute and Zen Center provides Buddhist-based community training and social services in areas like death and dying, prison work, the environment, women's rights and peace work. The institute is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and bases its work on a process-oriented vision of Buddhism that integrates education, spirituality, livelihood, service and community. The institute provides two chaplaincy training programs comprised of a certificate course on Buddhist chaplaincy training program in prison, which runs for two years, and a contemplative end-of-life care training. The prison chaplaincy training is open to individuals wishing to be ordained Buddhist priests and lay chaplains or individuals with an interested in learning a Buddhist perspective of death and dying. The contemplative end-of-life care training is offered to clinicians, and provides them with essential tools for taking care of dying patients. The chaplaincy course is available online and through classroom instruction. In addition to completing the coursework, all students must complete at least 100 hours of volunteer chaplaincy.

    Liberty University Online

    • The Master of Divinity course in chaplaincy at Liberty University is an online program that will prepare students for careers in ministry with a specialization in chaplaincy. The coursework is based on Christian theology, and will prepare students in ministry skills and strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on chaplancy training in multicultural and religiously plural settings. Graduates from the program will be well equipped for careers as military or institutional chaplains. Other career roles include Sunday school administrator, curriculum director, Christian educator and Christian school administrator. Students must complete 45 credit hours.

    Baptist Bible Seminary

    • Baptist Bible Seminary provides a Master of Divinity in military chaplaincy. In addition to specializing in chaplaincy, students can also enroll in a variety of minors including pastoral leadership, global missions, church education and pastoral counseling. The Master of Divinity training is available through classroom instruction or distance learning. In addition to completing their coursework, students are required to engage in research and writing. The online courses are delivered over eight-week periods.
