The Penn Foster career school offers an at-home course of study for electrician training. This course is made up of several instruction sets. The instruction sets are ordered from introductory to difficult, so an electrician studies harder coursework after passing progressively tougher exams. The instruction kit includes wiring tools and screwdrivers, since the electrician must learn to install electricity generators, power adapters, and other devices.

Electrician training may involve working as an apprentice. Like other skilled trades, a novice electrician frewuently works under a master electrician to receive training on the job. The electrician training program at Lane Community College requires students to be legally registered with the Board of Labor and Industries. After an electrician apprentice is finished with the entry-level training, the electrician reaches the rank of journeyman.

Electrician training is available at trade schools, and the goal is to graduate students who can immediately start work. Everest College provides training in additional areas that an electrician must know. Legal regulations such as building and electrical codes are taught to students during electrician training classes. Electrician students learn to read housing blueprints and take mathematics courses so they can calculate wire lengths and power requirements to provide sufficient power to operate appliances in houses and businesses.

Specialization is available in electrician training programs. The courses proposed at the Colorado School of Mines prepare an electrician to install wiring specifically in mines. Specific training is helpful because mines include dangers, such as coal dust that may catch fire and explode. Mines also may have very long wires to power drills and elevators thousands of feet underground. This program is designed to provide additional training to electricians who have taken basic coursework and want to learn advanced skills necessary to install wiring in a mine.
