Schools for a Master's of Physical Therapy

In order to qualify for employment as a physical therapist, an individual must have a post-baccalaureate from an accredited program. Upon completion of a program, graduates will then be eligible to become licensed in the state they wish to practice. As of 2010, 12 schools are approved to award master's degrees in the field of physical therapy.
  1. Winston Salem State University

    • Students attending Winston Salem State University have the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in physical therapy that provides the necessary education to sit for the national licensure examination. The program requires 31 months of study to complete, and students attend school year-round after beginning their studies in January. Course options include anatomy and physiology, human neuroscience, pharmacology, health care systems, pathology, cardiopulmonary systems, therapeutic exercise and prostherics and orthotics. In addition to course work, students must also complete 31 weeks of clinical practice, rotating between three different locations. Tuition costs for Winston Salem State University are available from the school upon request. Financial assistance is available.

    University of Tennessee-Memphis

    • The College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Tennessee-Memphis campus awards graduates of the physical therapy program with a Master of Science in the field. Students must complete a total of 36 semester hours of study and are eligible to sit for the national licensure examination upon graduation. The school combines coursework with clinical experience programs to provide students with a hands-on learning experience. Fields of study include biostatistics, health care management, developmental biomechanics, neurological techniques, orthopaedic physical therapy and musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment. As of 2010, tuition costs for the Master of Science in physical therapy program are $403 per credit hour. Financial aid is provided for qualified students.

    California State University-Fresno

    • The physical therapy department at the Fresno campus of California State University is designed to prepare students to become licensed to practice in all 50 states. Students who have completed a bachelor's degree program can complete their master's degree in two years, while those who have completed only the pre-admission requirements are able to complete their studies in three years. Courses include patient assessment, pathokinesiology,, orthopedic management, therapeutic technology, neurosciences in physical therapy and physical diagnosis. In addition, students must complete clinical practices before graduation. Financial aid and payment arrangements are available.
