How to Cite All Types of References in Essay Papers, Including MLA and APA

For students and professionals alike, writing a well-researched and strongly worded essay paper is only half the battle. To avoid plagiarism, every author must cite all research properly on a reference page attached to the essay. Depending on your area of study, you may be required to use a certain style guide, such as the Modern Language Association for English papers or the American Psychological Association for scientific works. Each style guide has its own specific rules and regulations for reference pages.

Instructions

  1. General Rules

    • 1

Include a separate reference page at the end of your essay. This must not include any information except for your references. In MLA format, title this page Works Cited. In APA, title this page References. The title should be centered on the first line of the page, but do not use bold, underline or any other identifiable marks.

    • 2

Set your document so that all lines after the first line of each reference essay are indented a half inch from the leftmost margin. This is called a hanging indent, and can be set for automatic use in many word processing systems.

    • 3

Invert each author's name, so that the last comes first, followed by the author's first and middle initials. In MLA format, include the first and middle name, fully written out. This is true for up to seven authors; if a work has more than seven authors, list six authors, insert an ellipses (...) and then list the last author's name.

    American Psychological Association Rules

    • 4

Alphabetize the reference list by the last name of the first author of each entry. If you have multiple works by the same author, list them in order of publication, starting with the earliest.

    • 5

Capitalize all major words in a journal article title. For non-journal entries, including books or Websites, capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the title and subtitle, as well as proper nouns.

    • 6

Italicize titles of books of journals, as well as any similar long work. Simply list titles of articles or essays; do not italicize or use quotation marks around these shorter entries.

    Modern Language Association Rules

    • 7

Double space all citations on your Work Cited page. Do not skip any spaces between entries.

    • 8

Capitalize each word in titles of articles and books, with the exception of prepositions, conjunctions and articles such as “the” or “an.” Italicize the titles of large works like books or journals, and use quotation marks with the titles of shorter works, such as articles or poems.

    • 9

List all page numbers as efficiently as possible. An article that spans from page 300 to page 313 would be written “pp. 300-13.

    • 10

Alphabetize the Works Cited page by the last name of the first author of each entry. For works with no title, include them listed alphabetically by the title. If you have multiple works by the same author, list the entries alphabetically by title.
