Enroll in a training program that is certified by the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies. Certified programs will follow the approved curriculum to ensure that students are prepared for the exam. The Albany Technical College offers a program that can be used as security-guard-certification training or as part of an associate's degree in law enforcement. The stand-alone training for students pursuing employment as security guards requires 29 credits to graduate. These credits can be earned by completing six classes which cover the curriculum topics proscribed by the Georgia Board of Private Detectives and Security Agencies. The program does require testing to gain admission and emphasizes real-world security situations.
Register for and take the certification exam. The Georgia Board for Private Detective and Security Agencies oversees licensing exams for all security-related professions. Applicants must register for the exams with the Board and may do so online. The tests are administered by PSI, a private exam proctoring company.
