The University of Madras was established by the Indian government on Sept. 5, 1857, and it is the oldest and largest campus in India. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs that are divided into 68 departments of study and are spread over four campuses that are structured into 18 schools offering part-time and full-time programs. These programs not only include teaching, but also research activities in arts, humanities, science, management and technology. Postgraduate courses include Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Commerce and Master of Business Administration, as well as postgraduate diploma and certificate programs. Some research programs include Masters in Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.

This university is named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi and is sprawled across a thousand acres of campus at the foot of the Maruthamalai Hills, about 7 1/2 miles from the city of Coimbatore. There are 13 schools and 33 research departments on campus for teaching and research, and some of these include the Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneur Development, the School of Distance Education, the Air Force Administration College and the Government Arts College. This university was established in 1982 and was named after a revolutionary Tamil poet, Bharathidasan. It's spread over a thousand acres on the Tiruchirappalli-Pudukkottai Highway and incorporates seven districts with 104 arts & science and fine arts colleges and 13 approved institutions. There are more than 250 diversified courses with more than half of the colleges offering postgraduate programs with degrees including Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.
