Academic dress for those graduating with a doctorate includes the graduation gown, doctoral hood and academic hat. The hat most often worn is a tam, or velvet academic hat. They are normally black and come in four-, six- and eight-sided styles. Doctoral program graduates typically wear a tam with six or eight sides with a gold tassel. Depending on the requirements of the academic institution, the doctoral tams and tassels may be different colors.

Place the tam on your head. One of the corners should be facing forward.

Adjust the top of the tam to have a slight tilt to the right. The top should have a slight puff to it.

Place the tassel to the right side. After the degree is awarded, the tassel will be moved to the left side.
