How to Wear Military Honor Cords

During college graduation ceremonies, some graduates wear an additional mark of recognition known as an honor cord. This consists of two tasseled cords connected by a central knot. Honor cords usually represent membership in an academic honors society such as Phi Beta Kappa, but other types of honor cords also exist. One of these is the military honor cord, which is granted to veterans of the armed forces. The most common color for military honor cords is a repeating pattern of red, white and blue. It's important to wear military honor cords correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether your school permits the wearing of military honor cords. Some colleges and universities include honor cords in graduation dress, while others do not. Some allow only honor cords from certain societies.

    • 2

Check the back of your graduation gown. Many gowns have a loop at the bottom of the yoke on the upper back.

    • 3

Slip the tassels at one end of the honor cord through the loop and pass the cord through until the knot in the center is aligned with the loop. Two of the cord's four ends should be on the left side of the loop, two on the right.

    • 4

Put on your gown and pull the cords on either side over the shoulders. You should now have two tasseled cords hanging over your left shoulder and down your chest, with another two on the right side.

    • 5

Adjust the cords so that the lengths of the two sides are even.
