How to Wear a Mortar Board

The mortarboard dates back to ancient times, though its name wasn't adopted until the 19th century. The headgear was used to distinguish the educated population from the uneducated. When students graduate from many school programs, primarily high school and college, they wear clothing that identifies them as a graduates. This includes a special gown and a mortarboard with a graduation tassle. Some graduates toss their mortarboard at the end of the ceremony in celebration.

Locate the longer point on one side of the mortarboard. This is the back of the cap and should point down the back of your head.

    • 2

Set the mortarboard onto your head so it fits securely. If it is still loose and you think it may slip or fall off, secure it with several bobby pins, attaching the edges of the cap to your hair.

    • 3

Position the tassle so it is on the right side of your face. When you graduate, you will reposition the tassle on the left side.
