How to Explain Academic Probation

Academic probation has to do with a specific school and their grade policy, compared to the grades that a student is currently getting. Different schools will have different levels of grades that constitute academic probation, and the process of probation will differ depending on the school as well. If you've been placed on academic probation, or know someone who has, you need to know how to explain it in terms that can be understood.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain that academic probation happens when a student hasn't met the criteria for grades set forth by a specific campus. Give the criteria for yours, such as a 2.0 grade point average. Then explain what it means to not meet it according to your school's policy -- for instance, does your school give academic probation the first time you don't make a 2.0, or after two consecutive semesters with that low grade point average?

    • 2

Clarify the consequences of academic probation, as they relate to the campus in question. Does a student on probation have to stop being in activities, or are they in danger of failing out of school? Does a student need to take remedial courses, or simply work on their grade point average?

    • 3

Define what will happen if the consequences are not met. For instance, will a student be kicked out of school if they do not get their grade point average above 2.0 in the space of two semesters?
