How to Write an Academic Computer Paper

Writing an academic computer paper it is often done to support a piece of code that you have written. Most computer science courses deal with programming, and programming papers are usually support documents that back up the code that you have designed. This can make them different than the papers that are written for other academic disciplines. While you must know how to write the code for your paper in order to succeed, it is also important to give consideration to how you prepare the paper that will accompany it. Some papers, however, may also be purely theoretical.

Instructions

Write a title that is engaging and that clearly and concisely sums up the aim of the paper. If an academic paper is being submitted for publication either in print or online, there is a good chance that thousands more people will read the title than the paper itself. It is, therefore, worth an investment of time to compose a good one. The title can, in some instances, be the thing that prompts someone to read the paper itself. Aim for precision, compactness and clarity.

Create an introduction that clearly states the problem that is going to be examined by your paper. In the case of a paper that is accompanying a program, you should state the problem that is solved by the program. In a purely theoretical paper, you should state what point is going to be proved or argued by the paper. An introduction needs to be clear and concise, and should let the reader know roughly what he will encounter during the rest of the paper.

Write your paper according to good standards and scientific principles. The same guidelines that you read in any good "how to write a paper" material will apply when you write computer science papers. You should structure your paper with an introduction, body and summary or closing. You should write from an outline. Also important, is that you should try and highlight what is new in your paper. Computer science is a field that moves very quickly, so if you can demonstrate new ideas that are ahead of the pack you will increase your chances of publication.

Edit the paper, edit it again and then have a second eye edit it as well. Test and retest is the standard practice when it comes to writing a computer science program. Apply the same idea when you write a paper. Other people are likely to be more objective about the paper you have written. However, the highly technical nature of computer science means that you will want someone with a similar background or education to proofread your work so that they can grasp the subject material.
