Schools for Divorce Counselors in Wisconsin

Wisconsin schools and universities offer students a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology, counseling and social work courses online or in campus classroom settings for students who are interested in obtaining their undergraduate work in psychology or divorce counseling. Once students complete their basic psychology and counseling educational courses, they can pursue advanced specialty degree programs in school counseling, vocational counseling, rehabilitation counseling, mental health counseling, substance abuse counseling and Marriage Family Therapy (MFT).
  1. Undergraduate Campus Programs

    • The University of Wisconsin offers campus classes in undergraduate psychology programs. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Wisconsin Madison, you must complete 120 credits, with at least 29 credits in psychology courses. The course curriculum at Wisconsin colleges and universities requires that students complete courses focusing on biological psychology, clinical psychology, cognitive psychology and perceptual sciences, social and personality psychology, developmental and general psychology. An undergraduate degree in biology or sociology is also recommended if you wish to obtain an MFT degree. Other Wisconsin campuses that offer programs in psychology and health include Marian University, Lakeland College, Concordia University, Edgewood College and Wisconsin Lutheran College.

    Graduate Campus Programs

    • The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers two master's programs, the thesis and the course work programs in psychology leading to an MFT. The thesis program requires that you have at least a 3.0 GPA, complete a one year master's thesis, pass the oral exam on the thesis and meet all other graduate school requirements. The course-based program requires at least 30 credits in graduate courses in psychology and a B average. You can make more money as a divorce counselor or MFT in Wisconsin if you have a Ph.D., but you don't have to have one. The University Wisconsin-Stout has an MFT graduate program. Students need to complete 500 client contact hours and 100 hours with supervision to obtain their degree. Wisconsin graduate programs vary from two to three years for master's programs and five years for Ph.D. programs in academic, clinical and research courses.

    Online Courses

    • You can also take online undergraduate and graduate degree courses in psychology or counseling if you are unable to attend a Wisconsin campus. Online classes can be found by visiting websites such as Capella University, Argosy University, Adler School of Professional Psychology, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, Walden University or Yorkville University. Curriculum includes a combination of courses, residencies and field experience.

    Wisconsin Licensing Requirements

    • To obtain a license in Wisconsin as a marriage and family therapist to perform divorce counseling, you need either a master's or doctoral degree in MFT, or a master's or doctoral degree in a field that has similar educational requirements equivalent to a MFT, such as sociology or biology from an accredited Wisconsin educational institution.
