Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia, offers a master's degree in reading education. Intended for PK-12 grade teachers, the program includes instruction regarding learning processes, instructional methods, assessment and research in reading. Graduates complete an electronic portfolio in addition to coursework, the Dewar College of Education Advanced Teacher Self-Assessment Instrument and the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE).
The University of West Georgia in Carrollton also offers a master's in reading. Required courses teach theories of reading instruction, methods and materials, assessment and current trends in reading education. Students complete three hours of clinical experience teaching reading. Those who already hold a master's degree in education may receive add-on certification in reading by taking 15 hours of these courses.
Georgia College offers a reading endorsement program at the Milledgeville campus. Students learn about the process of reading, assessment strategies and instructional methods across the curriculum for PK-12 grade learners. Since the program is designed for current teachers, classes run on Saturdays and online. Applicants must submit evidence of their ability to hold a Georgia certificate to enroll in the program.
North Georgia College and State University offers two paths for teachers to gain a reading endorsement. One option entails three online courses in trends, assessment and reading materials. Districts that have at least 20 interested participants can request delivery of an onsite program during summer months or throughout the school year. Both options require documentation of field experience, as well.
