Wind Turbine Training at Community Colleges

With a continued focus on green energy and creating ecology-friendly jobs, community colleges have begun forming programs geared toward the industry of wind turbines. With wind turbine technicians making an average of $40,000 to $54,000 a year in a growing industry, these training programs continue to grow.
  1. Certificate Programs

    • Typically the first step before obtaining an associate's degree, certificate programs prepare students for entry-level positions in the industry. Skills include construction, maintenance and operation of wind turbines. Graduates of certificate programs should be able to install, service and repair small-scale wind turbines as well as troubleshoot automated systems while observing safe climbing skills and wearing protective equipment.

    Associate Degrees

    • Graduates of most programs will receive an associate in applied science degree. Students receive training in managing personnel, diagnosis of turbine issues as well as data acquisition. Class loads consists of Applied Math, Fluid Power, Advanced PLCs and System Integration, College Physics, Facilities Maintenance and Job Seeking Skills. Programs also often require field work experience where a student fulfills the duties of an entry-level technician and works under a supervisor.

Education Centre for Renewable Energies (BZEE)

    • The BZEE (Bildungszentrum fur erneuerbare Energien e.V.) is a German association founded in 2000 that sets the standards for qualifications in the wind and energy industry. Their main focus is on safety in terms of what contractors and operators demand that go beyond the typical legal requirements. Working with industries, the association assures that all trainees meet the standards of employers. The BZEE is considered the main training provider for wind turbine technicians in Europe and North America.

    Application Requirements

    • While varying from community school to school, application requirements can often be quite vigorous due to the physical nature of the eventual desired job. At Kalamazoo Community College requirements include a weight limit of 260 pounds, a valid driver's license, the ability to lift and manipulate 50 pounds and the ability to travel up to 95 percent of the time. North Iowa Area Community College requires students to have a strong math understanding with a score of 16 or higher on the math ACT.
