Boston University's College of Communication (bu.edu) offers a number of media courses split across two summer sessions. Each session runs for five weeks, with classes available in media writing, production, new media, screenwriting and filmmaking. The university has an open enrollment policy, welcoming visiting and international students to register online for courses with no application for admission required. Media internships can also be arranged during one or both summer sessions. On-campus housing and dining options are available for students not from the area.
New York University also offers summer media courses through the Cultural Capital: Media and Arts in New York City program. Examining areas such as media, culture, economics and the arts, participants learn through lectures in the classroom as well as through site visits to major media and arts destinations outside of class. The program is open to anyone who holds a high school diploma and on-campus housing and dining plans are available to all participants.
In addition to classroom courses offered throughout the United States and the world, the School of Audio Engineering (sae.edu) runs short four week online courses in creative media, film, audio, and production. The courses are available at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and consist of theory reading, practical assignments, research, and online interactive group sessions. These courses offer open registration and are taught by industry professionals.
Another option for online study is through Mediabistro's courses that range in duration from four to 10 weeks, with several self-paced options also available. Mediabistro is dedicated to serving creative industry professionals and offers courses in new media, media training, reporting and social media.
The School of Literature, Communication, and Culture at Georgia Institute of Technology provides students with the option of enrolling in two media summer programs in Europe. The Italian Film Studies program in Gorizia, Italy offers courses in film production, theory, and history. The Danish Media and Culture program in Aarhus, Denmark allows students to study Danish media and film with the option of additional coursework in management, social sciences, or the humanities. Both programs are open to non-Georgia Tech students and run for one month. Upon completion, students earn six hours of transfer credit.
Other study abroad options are available through the University of California Education Abroad Program, which is open to all students in the UC system as well as non-UC students. Offering 200 programs in 35 countries, participants are able to select a program, including many short term options. Media studies programs are available in Australian, Egypt, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, among others.
Columbia Journalism School at Columbia University runs several continuing education programs, including a series of short training courses in digital media. Held across one to five days, the courses cover topics such as social media, multimedia production, and digital media narrative. Courses vary in ability level from beginning to advanced and are held during evening hours or on weekends to accommodate working professionals. The courses are run as workshops, aiming to provide hands-on, interactive training.
The University of California Los Angeles' extension program is one of the oldest and largest continuing education programs in the country. A variety of classes are offered in the evenings, on weekends or online, including numerous media and entertainment courses. Options for study include writing for film and television, multimedia narrative, broadcast journalism and working with the media. The program has an open enrollment policy.
