University Courses in Media

Students wishing to study media at the university level have a wide range of choices. Many institutions offer courses in new media, interactive and/or digital media as well as cinema and communication arts. For those students who wish to major in or devote a large portion of their study to media, there are many institutions and programs to choose from.
  1. The New School M.A. in Media Studies

    • The graduate program in media studies at the New School in New York City offers a range of interdisciplinary media coursework, combining both media studies and the creation of media, including film, video, digital and new media. Courses include media theory and research, documentary studies, film form and practice and sound studies. The program is designed to work with the schedule of working professionals and includes an online option. Certificate programs in media management, documentary studies, screenwriting and film production are also offered.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Comparative Media Studies

    • The Comparative Media Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers courses designed to prepare students to create and study media. The program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, and both programs are intended to combine theory and practice and include room for research spanning multiple media forms. The program emphasizes six main areas of comparison. These are comparisons across media, across national borders, across historical periods, across making and thinking and across perspectives. Courses analyze media form, content and context across all these areas of study.

The University of Chicago Cinema and Media Studies Program

    • The Cinema and Media Studies Program at the University of Chicago primarily focuses on the study of film, but in the context of a media tradition dating back to photography and sound recording and carrying through to television, video and digital media. In addition to cinema and film theory, departmental focuses include new media, photography, experimental and avant-garde film and video, African-American cinema, subcultural media practices and performance theory. The university offers both a graduate and undergraduate program in cinema and media studies.

University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts: Media Arts and Practice

    • Housed in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, the Media Arts and Practice Program offers an interdivisional Ph.D., which combines media practice with media theory.
