The University of Chicago features a Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies. This Ph.D. curriculum contains courses in everything from neorealism to Chicago film history and Latin American cinema. Every doctoral candidate must demonstrate proficiency in at least two foreign languages before starting the program. The Film Studies Center at the University of Chicago hosts collections as well as film festivals for the benefit of Ph.D. students. Media studies students pay for their education while teaching in the first three years through GAI Fellowships. The School of Theater, Film and Television at the University of California-Los Angeles offers a Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies. This Ph.D. program includes classes in animated film, film genres and experimental film. Graduate students attend film festivals as well as student screenings at the James Bridge Theater. The University of California-Los Angeles maintains five graduate apartments within five miles of campus for the convenience of doctoral students. The School of Theater, Film and Television along with the UCLA Career Center work with Ph.D. students to find internships at Hollywood studios and agencies.

The University of Colorado-Boulder runs a Ph.D. in Communications with a media studies emphasis through its School of Journalism and Mass Communication. This 42-credit doctoral program requires coursework in media ethics and message effectiveness in the first year. Courses in national cinemas and visual anthropology form the core of this doctoral program.
