The Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania, founded by diplomat Walter Annenberg, focuses on examining the role of communications in public life. Course work applies an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing communication and communication methods. Students study the humanities as well as the social sciences and can participate in internships, independent study and study abroad programs. The doctoral program encourages students to conduct research and contribute to communication scholarship and policy.

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill offers courses in the effects of communications on cultural institutions. Students complete 30 credits of communications courses along with four or more courses in a concentration of their choice. They learn the skills necessary for interpreting communications problems in the areas of economics, political science and social relations. Through research and service, UNC students learn to apply ideas learned in the classroom to real life.
