Birbeck College at the University of London offers a short, part-time, certificate-awarding course in Development Studies in four modules. To achieve the Certificate of Higher Education awarded by the University of London, students must complete all four modules, for a total of 120 credits. The modules are: (1) Introductions: Understanding the Social World; (2) Theories and Development; (3) Development and Globalization, and (4) Actors in Development. The program is designed to give students a firm understanding of global power and inequality with regards to women, ethnicity, disability, and the like. The role of governments, NGOs, and non-profits is considered. Each course meets 11-15 times.

The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University offers summer-long certificate courses in International Development Studies. The program is designed to help participants anticipate and solve problems in social, economic, and political development. Students are required to take four classes in order to achieve the certificate, two of which must be Comparative National Systems and Introduction to Economic Development. Approved electives for the other two classes include Energy, Environment and Development in Developing Countries and Rural Development and the World Food Crisis.
