How to Cite a Motion Picture Source in APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) and the Modern Language Association (MLA) are the two most common styles of referencing materials used when writing papers in college. APA is used for citing materials in the sciences and social sciences, while MLA is used for writing papers in the liberal arts and humanities. You should cite motion pictures in APA in the text of your document and in the references section at the conclusion of your paper. All sources should be included in the references section and should be cited in the text when using quotes, paraphrasing ideas or writing summaries from the source.

Instructions

  1. Reference Section Citation

    • 1

Write the producer's last name, followed by a comma and the first initial. Write the job title in parentheses, followed by a comma. Cite the director's name the same way. If a company is the producer of a movie, write the company's name and then follow the same formatting.

    • 2

Write the release date in parentheses and end with a period. You only need to provide the year the film was released. Put the title in italics. Write "Motion Picture" in brackets, and end with a period.

    • 3

Provide the country where the work was made and released, followed by a colon and the name of the studio. If the motion picture was not circulated to the masses, replace the country and studio information with "Available from" followed by the complete name and address of the distributor; place commas after the name, address and city; put this in parentheses. Do not use a period at the end.

    In-Text Citations

    • 4

Determine where you want to include your motion picture citation within the text of your document. This will determine which method you use and how to cite your source. You can cite the motion picture at the beginning or the conclusion of a sentence.

    • 5

Write an in-text citation of a motion picture source in APA by using signal phrases in past tense or present perfect tense to cite earlier research. Write the producer's name in the text of your sentence; write the year of release in parentheses, then complete your sentence. The author and release date in parentheses serve to separate your citation from the rest of your sentence. Your signal phrase might look like "According to Peterson (1992)...."

    • 6

Write the producer's name and release date in parentheses at the conclusion of a sentence. There should be a comma between the producer's name and the release date. Write a period after the parentheses. Use this method when you are not required to write the producer's name within your sentence.

If there are more than six producers list them all, using last names only, in the first citation. Separate each name by a comma. In subsequent citations, write the last name of the first producer, followed by "et al." Place a comma after the producer's last name, and a period after "et al."
