The University of North Dakota (UND) offers an online Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree through its college of online and distance education. The M.S.W. program is a two-year, 36-credit hour degree taken entirely online with the exception of one campus visit throughout the duration of the student's education. The program is not designed for students without a bachelor's degree in the social work field. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The program is offered with both a thesis and a non-thesis option. The degree program's concentration is in the area of advanced general practice. Courses include research analysis and methods, and there are a number of courses for students to become familiar with working with families, individuals and communities.

Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, offers a similar program at the master's degree level. The program offered by Capella leads to a master of science degree in the fields of social and community services. The degree program requires students to complete 120 quarter credits. Students take a number of core courses in quantitative research and methods, professional ethics, and advanced research. Beyond the core courses, students study a variety of topics including those in the areas of the principles and practices of social work, contemporary issues in addictive and compulsive behavior, grief and bereavement counseling, the family in social context, causes and prevention of childbirth, and applied clinical sociology.

A third option for a master's degree online in the field of social work is the program offered through Texas State University. The program is also accredited by the CWSE. The program requires 62 credit hours. Of these, 41 credit hours are in core courses while the remainder come from election courses. The entire program is designed to last two years. Courses include those in the foundations of social work practice, social welfare policy and services, social work research, diagnostic settlement, advanced administrative leadership and advanced direct practice with families.
