Mountain State University offers three online programs in diagnostic medical sonography: an associate of science degree, bachelor of science degree and certificate. Before applying to the program students should complete coursework in algebra, medical terminology and computer science. The associate's degree and certificate programs can be completed in five semesters; the bachelor's degree program takes seven semesters to finish. In addition to taking courses online, all students are required to take part in a clinical rotation. Clinical experiences are arranged as close to the student's location as possible.

Washburn University awards certificates in sonography in a program that can be completed in two years or less. Students select among three specializations: general/vascular, vascular and cardiac. The general/vascular program takes 24 months to finish; the vascular and cardiac programs can be completed in just over a year. All courses are taken online, and clinical experiences are arranged near the student's home. Clinical rotations take place in a variety of settings, including large medical centers, private clinics and small community hospitals.

Jackson Community College offers three associate of science degree programs in sonography: vascular, general and cardiac. Applicants must have had courses in human biology, health occupations and sonographic instrumentation. All coursework is completed online through distance education. Students who live within 200 miles of the college are expected to travel to the school for orientation, laboratory classes and exams. Clinical experiences are arranged in the student's community.
