The only medical school in Jamaica is the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies. Founded in 1948, the school is located in Mona, Jamaica. The facility also serves as the primary educational facility for many surrounding islands including the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, the Cayman Islands, Antigua, Barbados, and the British Virgin Islands.
As of 2010, the school offers study programs in accident and emergency, basic medical services, community health and psychiatry, medicine, microbiology, obstetrics, child health, radiology, surgery, pathology, anaesthesia, and intensive care.
Admissions requires a completed application, found online at mona.uwi.edu or from the admissions office; completion of math, English, physics, biology, and chemistry prerequisites; a certified record of co-curricula activities; a 300-word personal essay; and transcripts for any college work completed.
Areas of research pursued by the facility include cancer studies, HIV/AIDS research, and substance abuse. The longest running program is a study on human T lymphotropic virus type 1, entering its twentieth year in 2010.
