Following a year of clinical base training in an area such as internal medicine, participants in Temple University's anesthesiology residency program are taught foundation skills such as how to assess patients prior to surgery. They also have an opportunity to rotate through cardiac and obstetric clinics. In subsequent years, residents are exposed to more specialty areas including pediatric anesthesia and pain management. Residents can select from an advanced clinical track that maximizes patient contact or a clinical scientist track that provides an opportunity to engage in research. Applicants to the program submit medical school transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal statement.

Anesthesiology residents at Vanderbilt University gain valuable clinical experience at Vanderbilt Medical Center and Children's Hospital, as well as the area's VA Medical Center. Vanderbilt notes on its website that residents are exposed to various anesthesia specialties including orthopedic, outpatient and pediatric anesthesia and are involved in about 450 cases each year. Residents can choose from advanced clinical or clinical science tracks, depending on whether they want to focus more on patient care or research. Residents are paired with faculty mentors and receive monthly evaluations from faculty on their progress. They have the option of spending up to six months carrying out research by participating in the clinician research track. Weekly conferences and annual workshops round out the education for anesthesiology residents. The Medical College of Wisconsin notes that its graduates perform well on licensing exams, with a 100 percent pass rate in 2006.
