The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is one of four medical schools in the University of Texas system. Located in Dallas, the Center enrolls about 4,500 students, residents and fellows who conduct postdoctoral work. Students can narrow their field of study to the Southwestern Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Science or the School of Health Professionals, depending on what type of medicine or biomedical research they want to go into after graduation. Ninety percent of the Center's annual enrollment must come from Texas students. Students enrolled in the four-year Medical School degree program learn about diseases, science and medical technology as well as take clinical courses during their first two years. In their final two years, they work with patients in rotations at the Medical Center.
A national college, Sanford Brown trains students for careers in the medical field at its Dallas campus. Six study programs are available to Dallas medical school students including Cardiovascular Technology, Medical Sonography and Surgical Technology. Graduates receive certificates or associate degrees enabling them to work in their field of medical study, which they can apply to further courses of study at four-year academic undergraduate institutions.
The Baylor University Medical Center is the main facility in the Baylor Heath Care System, which is one of the largest, independent, church-related hospital systems in the United States. The hospital and Medical Center is located in Dallas and serves more than 40,000 patients each year and admits more than 10 times that into its emergency rooms and outpatient clinics each year. About 180 interns, residents and fellows receive medical education in the Center's training programs.
Students interested in pursuing an education and career in alternative medicine as Chiropractors can study the field at Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas. The college has played host to the largest Chiropractic seminar in the world and is a well-known center for the study of Chiropractic science. Students can earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree as well as a Bachelor of Science in anatomy or a Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness.
