Top Nephrology Fellowship Programs

Nephrology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study of the kidney, from its anatomy to its physiological development to disorders associated with it. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "job opportunities should be very good" for physicians like nephrologists in 2010 and 2011, "particularly in rural and low-income areas." As such, there are a number of quality nephrology fellowship programs around the country, many offered through some of the biggest names in medical care.
  1. Duke University School of Medicine

    • The Division of Nephrology Fellowship Training Program at the Duke University School of Medicine was founded in 1962 and is a fully accredited program that awards four new fellowships each year. The fellowship provides comprehensive, hands-on training in clinical nephrology, transplantation, hypertension, dialysis, and various forms of kidney research. Fellows have access to extensive state-of-the-art facilities, including the 924-bed Duke University Hospital, 274-bed Durham VA Medical Center, Duke Hypertension Center and Duke Clinical Research Institute. Most fellows take at least three years to complete the program, with one year of clinical nephrology followed by a minimum of two years of intensive training in clinical or basic science research under the supervision of a faculty member, which is funded by a grant by the National Institutes of Health.

University of Illinois at Chicago - College of Medicine

    • The respected UIC Nephrology Fellowship Program is two years with an optional third year reserved for research. All clinical rotations take place at one of three local area hospitals that are in close proximity of one another: the University of Illinois Hospital, John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, or VA Chicago/West Side Division. Fellows typically spend their first year of training in outpatient and inpatient nephrology care services where they perform focused examinations, form differential diagnoses, develop diagnostic strategies and acquire special procedural skills. Subsequent years have fellows focusing on clinical and basic science research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, with research opportunities including cell biology, acute renal failure, acid-base physiology and pathophysiology, anemia and osteodystrophy management.

    Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

    • The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center offers a two-year postgraduate fellowship program in conjunction with the Veterans Administration West Los Angeles Medical Center, providing hands-on training in both clinical nephrology and renal science. During the first year, fellows spend equal time at both hospitals in a clinical rotation supervised by full-time staff nephrologists and physicians. Fellows take an active role in treating patients with a variety of kidney-related disorders such as acute renal failure, hypercalcemia and complex electrolyte and acid-base disorders. The second year is tailored more toward individual pursuits such as laboratory research or the study of specialty areas like pediatric nephrology. All fellows must spend at least four months, however, performing research under the mentorship of a faculty member, with active campaigns that include clinical investigation into the areas of hypertension, transplantation, immunology and immunopathology.
