Law Schools With Indian Law Programs

The University of Missouri-Kansas City defines American Indian law as, "a complex combination of statutes, rules, regulations, tribal laws, treaties, and agency and judicial decisions." Due to the highly specialized nature of this sub-field of the legal profession, students wanting to study or specialize in this field should attend a law school with scholars already working in this area of law.

    • The Native American Law Center at the University of Washington serves as both a resource center for American Indian tribes, as well as an education program for those in law school or those simply interested in the subject of American Indian law. The university's law school offers a number of different courses in the area of Indian law to its law students, and also encourages students wanting to specialize in this field to take internships related to either Indian or environmental law. Courses currently offered as of 2010 include American Indian Law, Indian Law Seminar, Tribal Court Public Defense Clinic, Advanced Indian Law and Independent Research. Courses related to the field include Environmental Law: Pollution Control and Environmental Law Clinic. The law school is also involved in a number of ongoing projects that affect the American Indian community that include researching the area of ethics and genetics for Native Americans, among others.

    University of Colorado at Boulder

    • The University of Colorado at Boulder provides students with extensive opportunities to study Native American law. The law school makes use of curriculum offerings, research, externships and its affiliations with various tribal legal organizations to provide students with extensive experience in the field. The law school has an ongoing relationship with two local tribes and students work with a number of area law firms and non-profits entities. Five of the law school's faculty members are nationally recognized experts in the field. They include David Getches, Charles Wilkinson, Richard Collins, Sarah Krakoff, Jill Tompkins and Kristen Carpenter.

    University of New Mexico

    • The University of New Mexico's School of Law was one of the pioneering law programs in the country to offer an extensive Native American law curriculum. Courses offered in Indian law include Conflicts of Indian Law, Economic Development in Indian Country, Federal Jurisdiction, Indian Education and Equity, Indian Gaming, Indian Law, Indian Tax, Indian Water Law, Indigenous People and International Law, International Advocacy for Indigenous People, Law of Indigenous Peoples, Native American Rights, Native Land Rights and Claims, Natural Resources: Indian Country, Specialized Legal Research (Indian Law), State-Tribal Relations and Tribal Courts. Students completing 21 hours of coursework in Indian law are eligible to receive a certificate in the field. Students are in direct contact with the Indian community through its Southwest Indian Law Clinic.
