Schools With JD MBA Programs

Several dozen universities around the United States offer joint juris doctorate and master's of business administration (JD/MBA) programs that allow you to receive graduate diplomas in both law and business in an efficient manner. From Harvard on the east coast to the University of Hawaii in Manoa, from Stanford University to the University of Virginia, there are a variety of campuses where you can pursue your double degree (see "Resources" for a partial but diverse list). The program that is right for you depends on your ambitions, accomplishments, standardized test scores, budget and desired location.
  1. Harvard University

    • Considered the crème-de-la-crème of JD/MBA programs, Harvard allows you to achieve both degrees in four years rather than five. To be admitted, you must apply to, and be admitted separately, by both Harvard Law School (HLS) and the Harvard Business School (HBS). (You can also start at one of them and, during your first year, apply to the other.)

In the first year you enroll in either the Law or Business school -- your choice -- and in the second year you enroll in the other. Having completed the first-year requirements at both schools, you then enroll at both for years three and four. Tuition and financial aid in the first two years are determined by the school you are in. In year three it is determined by HLS, and in year four by HBS.

    University of Virginia

    • To be admitted to the four-year joint JD/MBA program at the University of Virginia, you must first be admitted separately by both the law school and the business school (you can also enroll in one of them and then apply to the other during your first year). Once you have been admitted to both schools, you must apply for permission from faculty advisers to enter the joint program.

During your first year, you fulfill first-year requirements at either the law or business school, paying tuition for that school. In the second year, you enroll in the other and complete first-year requirements there. In years three and four, you are considered a student at both schools and pay the higher of the tuitions, whichever that is for you, plus the fees at both schools. By the end of the fourth year, you must have earned at least 70 credits in law and 52.5 credits in business in order to receive your two degrees.

    Arizona State University

    • The four-year MBA/JD program at Arizona State University's. W.P. Carey School of Business and the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law involves one year of business study and three years of law. During the year at the business school you must complete 36 credits of study, including a strategic management course. An additional 12 credits of your studies in law will be applied to your business degree.

To be admitted to the joint program, you must apply separately to the two schools, which will render admissions decisions independently of each other. Let them know when you apply that you seek entry to the joint MBA/JD program. You can also join the program if you are already enrolled at the law school. Your tuition will be set by the business school for the year you study there, and by the law school for the other three years.
