Law Schools With Joint Degree Programs

Recognizing that many students' career goals necessitate advanced degrees in more than one subject, most law schools in America offers joint-degree programs. These programs, also called concurrent degree programs, generally allow you to earn both a JD and an MA or MBA in only four years, instead of the five that it would take to pursue the two degrees separately. Usually the other degree is offered by another school or department within the same university, but some law schools have cooperative joint programs with other universities entirely.

When applying to joint programs, check the requirements carefully. Usually you must apply to the two degree-granting departments individually, and you can join the concurrent degree program only if both departments admit you. Some schools require you to study one subject at a time, while others allow you to take courses in both subjects simultaneously. Some programs base tuition and financial aid on the law school rates for all four years, while others calculate your costs another way.

University of California at Los Angeles

    • UCLA law offers eight formalized joint-degree opportunities with other UCLA departments: the Center for African American Studies (JD/Master of Afro-American Studies), the Interdepartmental Program in American-Indian Studies (JD/Master of American Indian Studies), the Anderson School of Management (JD/MBA), the Department of Philosophy (JD/Ph.D. in Philosophy), School of Public Health (JD/MPH), School of Public Affairs (JD/ Master of Public Policy), the Social Welfare Department (JD/Master of Social Work), and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (JD/Master of Urban Planning).

In addition to its formal joint-degree programs, UCLA Law allows students to design their own concurrent program with other UCLA schools and departments or with "another high-quality school or university," as long as the other institution agrees to it as well. In the past, the law school has allowed students to create joint-degree opportunities with Tufts, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown, in subjects including diplomacy and international studies.
