Paralegal Degree Schools

Paralegals are trained professionals who assist attorneys in the practice of law. Paralegals play a number of roles including researching and preparing legal briefs, drafting contracts and legal arguments, organizing and tracking information, and assisting attorneys at trial.

Demand is high and competition is tough in this fast-growing field. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics website, "Formally trained, experienced paralegals should have the best employment opportunities." Colleges and universities throughout the United States offer paralegal studies, and many programs are American Bar Association-approved.
  1. Georgetown University

    • Georgetown, a Catholic Jesuit University overlooking the Potomac River and Washington, D.C., offers a Paralegal Studies Program through its School of Continuing Studies (SCS). Georgetown has been preparing paralegals to become leaders in the field for 35 years through a challenging academic curriculum taught by a distinguished faculty. Georgetown's Paralegal Studies Program was approved by the American Bar Association in 1977.

      According to the university SCS website, "The Georgetown University Paralegal Studies Program awards a post-baccalaureate certificate upon completion and offers both part-time evening and full-time day options." The full-time Summer Intensive Program is a 10-week course followed by a four-week internship. The part-time Evening Program involves three 13-week semesters.

    New York University

    • Located in New York City's popular Greenwich Village, New York University's Institute of Paralegal Studies at its School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) offers students an American Bar Association-approved diploma upon completion of the paralegal studies curriculum. According to the SCPS website, the university offers a part-time two-semester program and an intensive full-time one-semester course of study. According to the SCS website, "The Paralegal Studies Diploma Program is challenging, and prospective students should understand the time and motivation commitment required."

    The Tulane University of Louisiana

    • The School of Continuing Studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, La.,offers four levels of study including Bachelor's and Associate's degrees in Paralegal Studies, a Minor, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. The Tulane program, approved by the American Bar Association in 1981, is dedicated to preparing students of diverse backgrounds to become professionals in the demanding paralegal field. Tulane offers a free job placement service upon completion of the program and also supports many professional development activities.
