Law Schools in South Florida

South Florida is home to several law schools. Just as importantly, South Florida is also home to some of the world's most prestigious law firms, which puts law students and graduates within reach of career-making experience and opportunities. Another benefit to studying law in South Florida is exposure to the large amount of international business transacted out of South Florida involving South America and Europe.
  1. University of Miami

    • The School of Law at the University of Miami (UM) is ranked 60th by "U.S. News & World Report." In addition to the traditional J.D. degree, UM's Law School offers advanced graduate degrees specializing in international law, ocean and coastal law, real estate law, estate planning, and tax law. Even undergraduates can expand their knowledge into cutting-edge topics such as Islamic law and Internet law. Seven joint degree programs are also available that combine a J.D. with master's degrees in business, public health, real estate development, and marine affairs, among others.

The median LSAT score for UM Law School's Class of 2011 was 157 with a median GPA of 3.4. Approximately 85 percent of graduates pass the Florida Bar Exam on their first attempt. As of 2010 tuition costs were $38,000 per year for full-time students.

    Florida International University

    • Florida International University's College of Law is a relative newcomer to South Florida, having received full accreditation in 2006. But its main benefit is that it offers a full law education through a public university in South Florida whereas all previous law schools in the area were private. This makes a law degree more affordable and accessible to residents of South Florida while still offering all of the resources of a large public university. In 2010 tuition for Florida residents was $13,000 while tuition for non-residents was $27,000.
