How to Register for the GRE Online

Almost anyone who seeks admission to a graduate program will get to know the Graduate Record Exam, or GRE, very well. The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service, or ETS. Although sometimes the score is not heavily considered as a condition for admission, most graduate programs at least require that candidates have a GRE score on record. Luckily, registering for the GRE is not nearly as complex as the exam itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the GRE website (see References). Once there, click on "Register for the test."

    • 2

Click on "Computer-based test" at the top of the screen. It is possible to choose whether you want to take a computer-based or a paper-based test, but most students opt to take a computer-based test, which you can take almost any time at an authorized testing center.

    • 3

Click on "Online Registration." It is also possible to register via mail or phone, but registering on line is the fastest and easiest way.

    • 4

Select your country of residence from the drop-down menu. Once you do this, the screen will change to reflect whether or not computer-based GRE testing is available in your area. Click on "Register online for the computer-based General Test."

    • 5

Your screen will show the name of your country, as well as an option to identify your state or region from a drop-down menu. Choose the appropriate location, and then click "Next."

    • 6

There will be seven options on the screen. Click on the first one, which is "Schedule an Exam."

    • 7

The next screen will offer some rules, regulations, and general information about taking the GRE. Read through this information carefully. Then click "Next."

    • 8

A Policy Notice and Data Policy Notice will appear on the screen. Read through these two policies, and click the circle next to "I agree." Then click "Next."

    • 9

On the next screen, select the appropriate exam from the drop-down menu, which is "GRE-Graduate Record Exam." Then click "Next."

    • 10

Based on the location you provided earlier in the process, the website will offer testing centers in or near your state or region. Find the testing center that is nearest to you or most convenient for you, and then click "Schedule an Exam" next to that listing.

    • 11

The next screen will tell you how long the test will last and request that you choose either a specific day for testing or a three-month period in which you would be available to take the GRE at your chosen testing center. If you choose to search on a specific day, you may need to continue searching until you find a day that is available. If you choose to search in a three-month period, you will be presented with many different days. Choose one that is appropriate for you, and then choose a time.

    • 12

The next screen will ask you for your contact information, including your address and email address. Once you have provided all of the required information, click "Next."

    • 13

The next screen will ask you for your payment information. On this screen you will be required to submit your credit or debit card number, the expiration date of the card, etc. After you do this, submit your test reservation.

    • 14

After you submit your test reservation request, your reservation confirmation will be emailed to you. Check your email to verify that you have received it.
