Fill out an application. Whether you apply online or submit a handwritten application, make sure that you follow the directions carefully. Provide details where details are needed and use proper spelling and grammar. Don't leave any spaces blank. When filling out a handwritten application, use neat handwriting and a clear writing utensil.
Compile an impressive personal statement. SMU applications require that applicants compile a personal statement to assess the applicant and his ability to write. Choose a subject matter that is interesting and memorable, such as a life event, accomplishment, or something about you that makes you stand above the rest. Be creative in the personal statement and use proper spelling and grammar. Have someone else edit and proofread your statement before you submit your application.
Get good recommendations. Carefully consider whom you ask to write your recommendations and make sure that you are in good standing with them. Ask someone whom you know will build you up, compliment your strengths, and send in the required documents in a timely fashion. Some recommendations that stand out are those sent by individuals with influence and good character judgment, such as principals, vice principals, school board members, teachers and coaches.
Set up an appointment. Contact an SMU admissions counselor and try to set up an in-person interview. If granted, such an interview will allow you to make a good impression in-person. During the interview, express your desires about attending SMU, why you will be a good fit, what you can add to the campus and why you want to attend.
