How to Get Into Cornell's School of Hotel Administration

The Cornell School of Hotel Administration is the only such program offered by an Ivy League institution. Its curriculum covers the principles of running a business in the hospitality industry, such as management and operations, strategy and planning, design and construction, and financing and marketing. Most classes are held at the Statler Hotel, which is located on-campus. To enroll in the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, you must fulfill a set of application requirements specific to the college.

  1. Getting into Cornell's School of Hotel Administration

      Complete the requisite secondary school coursework, which requires 16 total units with at least four English units, three Math units and two Science units, including one Chemistry unit. The School of Hotel Administration recommends but does not require additional math, science and three years' foreign language.

      Take the SAT or the ACT. If you choose the SAT, you must take subject tests in mathematics and science. If you choose the ACT, you must take the additional writing test. Submit your results to the Cornell admissions office.

      Go online to http://admissions.cornell.edu/forms/FreshmanApplication.pdf and download the pdf file. It includes the freshman application instructions and the application. Print the file, and use a pen to complete the following sections: Common Application, Cornell University Freshman Supplement to the Common Application, Secondary School Report Form, Teacher Evaluation Form, Midyear Report Form and Final Report Form.

      Use word processing software to write a 500 word essay on the following question: "What work and non-work experiences, academic interests and career goals influenced your decision to study hospitality management? How will these contribute to your success at the School of Hotel Administration?" Print your essay and include it with the Freshman Supplement to the Common Application.

      Contact your secondary school and obtain an official transcript of your grades.

      Mail the Common Application and $70 application fee to the following address:

      Schedule a formal interview, either on or off campus, with a representative from the School of Hotel Administration. You can do this by going online to www.hotelschool.cornell.edu or calling 607-255-6376. (See Reference 1.) The interview must occur in the year you're enrolling. Bring a copy of your resume to the interview.
