Take courses recommended by the College of William and Mary while in high school. Although the school does not require any specific courses, they recommend four math classes ending in calculus, four science courses concluding in physics and four years of a foreign language.
Achieve the highest grade point average you can while in high school. The website for the college states they evaluate GPA's based strength of curriculum within each individual school. About 80 percent of admitted students are in the top 10 percent of their class, according to the website.
Get involved in extracurricular activities at school such as sports, band, yearbook or debate team. Participate in student government and volunteer in the community with community service projects or church activities.
Take either the SAT, the ACT or both. The school will take the higher score of the two tests if both are submitted. The average score for the SAT is 1280 to 1430 on critical reading and math and the average for the ACT is 27 to 32. Homeschooled applicants are encouraged to take SAT II's in math, writing and a lab science.
Fill out the Common Application, which William & Mary uses for its admission application. You can download the form or fill it out online. The Common Application is an organization that provides an admission application for more than 415 schools. Once you fill out the application, you can submit it to any participating school rather than fill out multiple applications.
Complete the William and Mary Supplement to the Common Application, the Secondary School Report form, In-State Tuition Form and Teacher evaluation form. Fill out the optional essay with the supplement even though it is optional. This is your chance to set yourself apart from other candidates. You fill out part of the Secondary School Report and then give it to your counselor who fills out the rest and mails it in along with a letter of recommendation and your transcripts. All of these forms are available online when you fill out the Common Application or you can download them from the college website.
Send in all your forms along with a $60 application fee by November 1 for Early Decision or by January 1 for Regular Decision. You can send them in online or mail them to the admission office at:
