Major State Colleges in Massachusetts

Massachusetts' public institutions of higher learning offer a variety of higher education options for its residents, including state colleges. These institutions provide Massachusetts' residents with the opportunity to earn a four-year degree in a liberal arts college setting without the high price tags that come with a comparable education at a private college.
  1. Bridgewater State College

    • With an approximate enrollment of 10,000 students, Bridgewater State College, located in Southeastern Massachusetts, is the largest state liberal arts college in Massachusetts. The college offers over 90 majors in four different schools--Arts and Sciences, Education and Allied Studies, Business and Graduate Studies. The 19:1 student faculty ratio ensures that students receive individual attention throughout their college career. In addition to its numerous programs of study, several research centers, including a center for public school leadership, a center for sustainability and a center for the advancement of research and teaching, make their home on Bridgewater's campus. As of February 2010, average in-state tuition costs average $6,473 for commuters and $14,589 for resident students.

    Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

    • This public college, located in the northwest corner of Massachusetts, enrolls approximately 1,960 undergraduate and graduate students. This small enrollment number, coupled with a 14:1 student faculty ratio, creates an intimate learning environment where students can establish working relationships with their professors. Although the college offers more than 50 liberal arts and professional majors, the most popular majors are English, Communications, Business, Sociology, Psychology and Fine Arts. In addition to offering a rich curriculum of courses, MCLA provides multiple specialized internship opportunities for students majoring in the arts. As of February 2010, yearly tuition and room and board costs total $15,200 for in-state students and $24,100 for out-of-state students.

    Worcester State College

    • The Princeton Review has named Worcester State a "Best Northeastern College" for six consecutive years because of its emphasis on high-quality college education that Massachusetts residents can afford. The college offers its students the opportunity to major in traditional liberal arts and sciences as well as professional degree programs. About 5,400 students, both undergrad and graduate, enroll in Worcester State every year. These students enjoy a 16:1 student faculty ratio and an average class size of 19. The small class sizes ensure that students receive individual attention throughout the course of their education. As of February 2010, in-state tuition costs average about $14,700.
