Religious Colleges in South Bend, Indiana

As one of the most iconic schools in America, the University of Notre Dame has brought fame to the small city of South Bend, Indiana. However, the nation's top Catholic university is not the only religious school in South Bend. South Bend also has several other Catholic colleges and one evangelical Christian college.
  1. University of Notre Dame

    • Established in 1842 by French priests, the University of Notre Dame has grown to become the nation's top Catholic university and ranked in the top 20 national universities by U.S. News & World Report. BusinessWeek also week ranked Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business as the top undergraduate business school in America in 2010. Perhaps most famous for its football traditions, the University of Notre Dame continues to practice the same religious philosophy in teaching that the school was founded on over 150 years ago. Students at Notre Dame enjoy a successful and loyal alumni network that reaches into all 50 states and around the globe. The school houses approximately 8,000 undergraduate students and has one of the most selective admissions processes in the country.

    St. Mary's College

    • Built in 1844 as a sister school to Notre Dame, St. Mary's College serves as a four-year women's college with a long-standing tradition of Catholic teaching. Nationally recognized as the 97th best liberal arts school in the country, St. Mary's has produced several prominent and successful female leaders throughout the world. Although the school has its own loyal alumnae network, it is frequently recognized and included within the much larger Notre Dame network, as graduates of both schools acknowledge the similar reputations and emphasis on a quality Catholic education. St. Mary's houses an undergraduate student body of approximately 1,600 women.

    Holy Cross College

    • Originally founded as a junior college by the Brothers of the Holy Cross in 1966, the school converted to a four-year college in 2002. Although once thought of as a stepping-stone for students hoping to transfer to Notre Dame, Holy Cross College has developed its own reputation a Catholic college on the rise. Students enjoy a tightly knit campus that is home to fewer than 500 students, but enjoy the college town atmosphere of living in the shadow of Notre Dame. As part of the four-year bachelor's degree, students are required to participate in the global immersion experience program. In this program, students must travel to Ghana, India, Mexico or Peru to gain an appreciation and understanding of cultures in across the globe.

    Bethel College

    • As the only non-Catholic religious college in South Bend, Bethel College is an evangelical Christian college that specifically affiliates itself with the Missionary Church. With approximately 2,000 undergraduate students, Bethel College attracts students from around the globe. The school also has a strong athletic reputation, especially in baseball, and has produced top major league prospects in recent years. Academically, Bethel College earned a ranking of 20th best baccalaureate college in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges 2010.
