Nutritionist Programs in Oregon

Students who graduate from a nutrition program often go on to careers as dietary managers, nutritionists or dietitians. As part of their job responsibilities, they may supervise meal preparation or create healthy diet plans for individuals. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, dietitians and nutritionists generally make between $40,000 and $60,000 per year. Several colleges in Oregon offer nutrition programs that range in intensity from a certificate to a doctorate-level degree.
  1. Oregon Health and Science University

    • The Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) offers a graduate-level nutrition program through OHSU Hospital in south Portland. Students can choose to participate in the dietetic internship, which culminates in a graduate certificate in 10 months. The program also offers a master's degree in clinical nutrition and in clinical dietetics, each of which require about two years to complete. Applicants who are registered dietitians or graduates of the OHSU dietetic internship program receive priority in admissions to the master's programs. The clinical nutrition program focuses on medical nutrition therapy, with a wide range of sub-specialties available, including geriatrics, bone disease, diabetes care and obesity and weight management. A small number of students are selected each year to participate in a combined dietetics internship and master's degree program that incorporates both components offered at OHSU.

The school's Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences includes several nutrition-related undergraduate degrees, including dietetics, nutrition science and fitness and nutrition. The fitness and nutrition degree, an exercise and sport science major, prepares students to create and lead fitness and wellness programs for companies, schools and hospitals. Students in the dietetics program must participate in a supervised internship and pass the Registered Dietitian exam, while nutrition science majors focus on health-related research. In addition to its undergraduate offerings, OSU also has degree programs at the master's and doctorate level in nutrition, both of which focus on the scientific basis for nutrition studies.
