Nutritionist Programs in Massachusetts

Obesity rates are rising in the United States and childhood obesity is a particularly troubling epidemic. Nutritionists are the first line of defense and also play a role in fighting world hunger. You can choose from several programs in Massachusetts to prepare you for a career in nutrition.
  1. University of Massachusetts Amherst

    • The Department of Nutrition in the School of Public Health and Health Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers academic, outreach and research programs. The school offers Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. programs in nutrition, as well as professional development and non-credit courses. The classes are offered both on campus and online. The outreach program offers online instruction and on-campus and off-campus programs in food safety and nutrition for consumers and agency staff. Nutrition teachers in the outreach program come from the communities where the program is offered and students consist of adults learning to prepare nutritious meals for their families and children participating in 4-H programs. Active research projects include the Nutrition Biomarker Laboratory, obesity research, food safety and technology in teaching nutrition.

    Tufts University

    • The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University offers several graduate nutrition programs through the Department of Nutrition Science and the Department of Food and Nutrition Policy. They offer field-based research programs in several countries around the world, including several locations within the United States. Ph.D. programs are offered in agriculture, food and environment, biochemical and molecular nutrition, food policy and applied nutrition and nutritional epidemiology.

    Harvard School of Public Health

    • The Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health conducts detailed research on the relationship between dietary factors and major diseases. Programs are offered in nutritional biochemistry, nutritional epidemiology, public health nutrition and obesity epidemiology and prevention. All are graduate programs. The Department of Nutrition collaborates with scientists in other departments and institutions on a wide variety of projects.

    University of Massachusetts Lowell

    • The University of Massachusetts at Lowell offers a certificate program in nutrition. The program is available to degree candidates in other majors, as well as students with no formal education who choose to use the certificate as a first step in a new career path. Courses are offered online and on campus. Students can work at their own pace and complete the program one or two classes at a time. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to receive the certificate.
